1000km Am Nurburgring £34.99
weight 2kg by Fodisch & Behrndt
Weve been looking forward to this book for some time as finding
information on this classic race is often difficult. It was clearly
a problem for the authors too as this is by no means a definitive
history. Each race from 1953 - 1991 is featured with top ten results
and there are photographs from each race, but these are generally
only of the better known entrants. This is still a useful reference
source and there are a number of obvious subjects currently un-modelled,
but it could have been more detailed. Text in German.

The Car Design Yearbook #2 £25.00
weight 2.1kg by Stephen Newbury
This beautifully produced book highlights all of the significant
new production cars and design studies seen in the past year. There
are one or two slightly odd choices with models and concepts that
are a little over a year old, Peugeot H2O, and one or two omissions
such as the new Mazda RX8. Overall it makes for interesting reading
with each subject given two full colour pages, with plenty of excellent
photos and data charts. In addition to the cars themselves there
are profiles of some of the key designers in the industry including
Chris Bangle, who is responsible for the controversial styling of
the current BMW range.

Cunningham Sports Cars, 1951-1955 £15.99
weight 800g by Karl Ludvigsen
Following his foray at Le Mans in 1950 with two Cadillacs, Briggs
Cunningham took the step to produce his own cars during the early
1950s. This latest addition to the Ludvigsen archive series features
120 full page photos, most of which are previously unpublished,
of both the race cars and the few road cars that were built. Many
of the photos offer close up views of engine, chassis and suspension
detail and the reproduction is excellent. Apart from the cover all
is in black and white but then the original photos probably were
anyway so this doesnt detract from a very attractive publication.
Probably the best of this series that weve seen so far.

Indy Cars of the 1970s £15.99
weight 800g by Karl Ludvigsen
Starting with Jim Hurtubises front-engined Mallard, this looks
at not only the succesful, but also the more interesting and obscure
entrants to the Indy 500. The lack of colour is a little disappointing
when we consider how colourful many of these cars were but there
are plenty of close ups showing engine and suspension details that
could be helpful to modellers.

Memories of Ayrton £19.99
weight 1.2kg by Christopher Hilton
Its hard to believe that its nearly 10 years since that
fateful San Marino Grand Prix that was to be Sennas last.
There have been numerous books written about this great driver by
various well respected authors including Christopher Hilton. This
time Hilton takes a slightly different approach and has spoken to
over 120 individuals who had come into contact with the Brazilian
during his rise through the junior formulae and his time at the
very top of the greatest sport in the World. It makes for fascinating,
sometimes amusing, often touching reading. Not only has Hilton managed
to get many who would not normally be quoted publicly to share their
thoughts, but also their photo albums so there are many previously
unpublished photos. A must for all F1 fans.

Starting with the best of the bunch,
the article reprints on the spectacular Auto Union racers are nearly
all taken from the 1930s and give us both detailed race reports and
technical insights into the Porsche designed cars. Some of these technical
articles may be of help to modellers, and they certainly would be
if the reproduction quality wasnt so poor.
While 60 year old reference material may be a problem to reproduce,
there is no excuse in the case of the RS200. Again there are some
excellent articles here, with road and track tests as well as a few
rally reports featuring Fords pretty Group B machine.
For the RS200s ancestor, the Lotus Cortina, there are various
period road tests, a couple of detailed buyers guides taken from modern
classic car publications and even sections of the 1964 service manual.
Many great drivers were associated with Lotus and so of course we
have the profiles of Clark, Miles, Fittipaldi, Peterson, Andretti
and many others. A large section of this book is made up of reprints
from Sports Car and Lotus Magazine and a series they called Lotuseers.
These make interesting reading as in addition to the likes of Innes
Ireland and Jim Clark there are a number of amateurs and promising
up and coming drivers, many of whom weve never heard of!
Unique Publications archive must be fairly extensive as they
continue to find large quantities of interesting magazine articles.
This is packed with technical features and race reports featuring
one of the cars that changed the face of motorsport for ever, the
light-weight mid-engined Cooper 500. The rivals in the title vary
from the better known such as Keifts and the beautiful Emerysons,
to the plethora of home built specials which started many an engineer
and driver on their motor racing career. With all this great material
we are more frustrated than ever at the woeful standard of reproduction,
especially of the photographs. |
