reviews, page 1
Within the review pages we try to give a balanced 'first view'of new kits, hand-built models, books and videos. Our aim is not to set the world to rights but to give collectors who cannot visit GPM an idea of whether the models on offer are accurate and of good value. We also try to give a little background to the cars. Our aim above all is to try to ensure that when you receive a model or book or video through the post from GPM - that you know in advance whether it has any 'hidden' snags or problems

Audi 200 Quattro Portugal 1988 Shell - kit

£43.65

Following the demise of Group B, Audi’s World Rally contender was more often than not the rather unwieldy 200 saloon, a machine more at home on the Autobahn than the gravel stage.
Still, David Llewellyn put up a good fight in Portugal before steering failure caused him to go straight off the course. Scala have captured the car well with this kit, based on PM castings. There is a pleasing level of p/e detail and the decals are well printed. In this kit there are notes saying that the decals are from varied suppliers and that most will not need any solvent. It isn’t clear which sheet is which so be careful. The end result will be well worth the care.

Ford Escort RAC 1973 #18 Motorcraft - kit

£43.65

Markku Alen rounded out a Ford 1-2-3 finish on the 1973 RAC rally in his white and red Motorcraft backed car. The kit is Scala’s familiar well cast Escort.
There is a fair amount of flash to remove from the window openings but no bubbles and the surface is very clean. The Minilite wheels have cast inserts with turned rims, so will need painting, and the decals are well printed.

Ford Escort RAC 1973 #1 Uniflo - kit

£43.95

Roger Clark finished one place in front of Alen in the white and black Esso Uniflow sponsored machine. Apart from the decals and instruction photos this kit is basically the same as the previous one and will look equally good when finished.

Audi 200 Quattro Procar 1989 #5 Resto - kit

£43.65

The Audi 200 may not have been the best rally car but it was good enough for Jean-Michel Martin to seal his fifth Belgian Procar title in 1989 against various Sierra Cosworths, Porsches and Renault Alpines.
The kit is again based on PM main castings with Scala ancillaries and the decals capture the colourful livery well. The main body colour is a particularly vivid shade of green and a VW colour is quoted for this in the instructions.

Audi Quattro RAC 1984 Mouton - built

£133.80

Michele Mouton finished 4th on the 1984 RAC rally and this hand built captures the shape and decoration of the car well. There is plenty of fine detail and a well appointed interior and it goes to show how good these models can look when carefully built.

Chevron B21 Daytona 2001 Jagermeister

£133.80

Using Kaiser’s Chevron kit as a base, Competition 43 have done a fine job of modelling the bright orange machine which ran in the Daytona Historics. The paint finish is excellent and the detailing has been well applied. We don’t have a result but it’s a good looking subject..

Bentley Embiricos Le Mans 1950/1951

£49.95

Also known as the Bentley Continental, this Bentley was instigated by the Paris Rolls Royce & Bentley agent Walter Sleator as a response to the increasingly futuristic looking cars coming out from Bugatti, Lago-Talbot and other French manufacturers which made the traditional English cars look somewhat staid. He persuaded his client, Greek banker André Embericos, to commission the car and the resulting coupé was built by Pourtout in Paris. The three kits all capture the lines of the car very well and feature the minor detail changes which took place over a period of years.

In original form the car had spatted rear wheels and then for racing purposes there were various vents cut into the wheel arches for brake cooling. On the early road car kit the spats are cast integrally and on the race kits we are supplied with them as separate castings. The instruction photos show the 1949 car with the spats fitted but the race shots we have they aren’t, the kit gives you that choice. In the later race car kit there is also the option of building the car as it still existed prior to restoration in the early 1990s. Since then the rear lights have changed slightly but this beautiful machine is still going strong. It is rumoured that when it arrived for the 1950 race it already had 125,000 miles on the clock!
The quality of the parts is superb with very cleanly cast resin, decent wheels and a wealth of excellent p/e. The instructions are also excellent with several pages of written detail and photographs of various sub-assemblies in build.

Lotus Elite Le Mans 1963 #39 Team Elite

£49.95

The Lotus kit is equally well made and captures the Wagstaff/Fergusson class winner very well indeed. The heritage of these kits is excellent as South West Model Cars have acquired these patterns from Tim Dyke and are using the same resin casting firm that Marsh and many others use. The end results will be very fine models.
