Within the review pages we try to give a balanced
'first view'of new kits, hand-built models, books and videos. Our
aim is not to set the world to rights but to give collectors who cannot
visit GPM an idea of whether the models on offer are accurate and
of good value. We also try to give a little background to the cars.
Our aim above all is to try to ensure that when you receive a model
or book or video through the post from GPM - that you know in advance
whether it has any 'hidden' snags or problems

Using
Racing 43's excellent, well detailed metal 2-door Impreza WRC kit
as a base, this is a very attractive subject that should build with
ease. The decals are clearly printed by Virages and include all the
sections other than the main body colour which is Ferrari Procar red.
A Glasurit reference is included in the very basic instructions for
this colour or you could use Tamiya TS049.
The
Mitsubishi is a pure Arena kit with the majority of the components
cast in a crisp BBR style resin. There are one or two small, visible
pinholes in our kit but nothing that can't be fixed. The windows are
vac-forms front and rear with p/e and flat sheet for the sides and
in addition to the window frames there is a good level of p/e detail.
The instructions include both Humbrol and Tamiya colour references
and the build should be relatively straightforward. A colour photo
of this and the Subaru above can be found on the back of FSW 9/2003.

We
initially had this model listed as a Cheetah Cadillac. The thought
that this car was powered by a Cadillac rather than Chevy engine was
largely down to its sponsorship by a Cadillac dealer. We had no reference
material to check this but Marsh Models now tell us that they have
been told it definitely had a Chevrolet engine. In the kit instructions
it also says they are unsure of which tyres it used. As most of these
cars seemed to run on Goodyears, that is what has been applied to
the model. If you know differently you will no doubt let us know!
What we can tell you is that the model is beautifully finished and
looks superb!

When
we looked at this kit we noted that while the model captured the physical
details of the car very well, a little additional reference would
be helpful for decal placement. We obviously have a picture that Marsh
don't because there is a Ford-Zakspeed decal missing from the rear
of the car above the three vents. They now think the shot they had
was from practice and the missing decal will be on future models.

A
generally well finished hand built model of a very elegant subject.
The silver paint has one or two tiny blemishes but otherwise, the
interior is well detailed, the photo-etch carefully applied and the
overall presentation excellent with the car mounted on a velour base
in an embossed box
We
see far too few subjects from the FIA Sportscar Championship but it
seems we can always rely on JPS to model at least one of the Pescarolo
Courages, especially as they seem to win at least one race each year.
In 2003 they won two, the first and last, and it's the former that
is modelled here. The new car was finished in a simple Kawasaki-style
bright green that isn't quite as vivid as the usual Pescarolo Sport
colour. The painted bodyshell is to JPS' usual high standard and the
other kit components will make for a straightforward build.
Similar
parts capture the Le Mans cars very well. The paint this time is two
tone for the traditional Pescarolo green and dark mica blue. The masking
is slightly off between the two colours in places but the comprehensive
decals cover the joins. Take your time with the decals and these will
build very good looking models.
Silver
is often a problem colour for painting but JPS have done a very good
job on this one. There are one or two tiny blemishes on the sides
of our kit but as so much of the car is covered with decals these
won't be obvious once finished. The livery is very attractive and
if you fancy a simple project this is ideal. That said there is still
a fair level of detail and the finished article will look excellent.
We know virtually nothing about the car, other than that it ran in
the French Super 1600 Championship.
The
Ferrari is another Pescarolo related subject, as he shared driving
duties with Mike Parkes before the car retired from the 1971 24 Hours.
Looking at this one head on, the cockpit area looks slightly high
and narrow. The other dimensions check out well and this may be an
illusion from viewing the red painted shell. It will probably look
much better with the glass in and the white and blue Scuderia Filipinetti
decoration applied. The clearly printed decals capture the decoration
very well, though the colour placement photos have one or two decals
slightly mis-placed. Easy enough to rectify with race photos as reference.
