Lotus 43 H16 1st USA 1966
|
£29.60
|
|
First impressions of Jim Clark's US GP winner are that the castings
are nice and clean but that the main body looks rather oddly proportioned.
Lengthwise it's pretty close, about 1mm short, but it is 7mm too wide
in the body according to the measurements we have. Scaled up that's
30cm, or a whole foot in old money! Not good. |

BRM P83 H16 Monaco 1967
|
£29.60
|
|
Mike Spence had the same design of H16 engine as the Lotus above in
the back of his BRM for the 1967 Monaco GP, where he finished a creditable
6th. This time the shape looks to be much more balanced. We don't
have measurements for this one but there are several good photos around
and it checks out pretty well. As with many Leonardo kits it is also
a subject not otherwise available in kit form at present and as such
fills an important gap. |

Porsche 804 1st France 1962
|
£29.60
|
|
They're getting better! Gurney's French GP winner really looks the
part. Care will be needed with some of the very fine metal parts but
the end result should look pretty good. The wheels are particularly
well done and there's a fair level of engine detail under the removable
rear cowl. |

March 721 South Africa 1972 #21 Politoys
|
£29.60
|
|
Two more important gap fillers for F1 collectors, the Marches from
the 1972 South African GP. The works STP car only offers decals for
the Peterson car, though with a little spares box raiding the Lauda
machine could also be made. For the version offered all of the decoration
appears to be correct. At first we thought we'd noticed an omission
as some photos show the car with cowls around the radiators. These
were removed for the race due to overheating. |
Pescarolo's Politoys-backed machine was entered by a certain Frank
Williams and will no doubt be welcomed by collectors of his machines.
The car ran at Kyalami with the high 'tea-tray' front wing unlike
the works' cars more conventional set up. |

Iso IR7 Dijon 1974 #20 Merzario
|
£29.60
|
|
The ISO is another Williams car, this time driven by Merzario. A two-tone
red and white paint finish will be needed on this one. There's a fair
amount of flash on the main castings for this one, though thankfully
the exposed DFV engine is clean. With all of these kits a bit of work
is needed but again this is an important gap-filler. |

Ferrari 206S Trento-Bondone 1967
|
£29.60
|
|
The only sportscar among these releases has real potential. The basic
shape looks good when compared to the real car photo in the instructions
(why couldn't they have done the same for the F1 cars?) and for a
basic build it is simply a case of fitting the rear engine cover,
wheels, roll bar and steering wheel, plus painting of course. However
there is an engine and gearbox in the back, albeit moulded integrally
with the base plate. With careful trimming around these parts and
some scratch building a lot more could be done with it. |

With the Cooper-Maseratis Leonardo appear to be determined to find
versions we don't have photos of to check! One we had a cracking shot
of is the Siffert Monaco car, except that our kit box contained the
parts and instructions for Rindt's 1966 Holland car! We can find plenty
of photos of this car with it's distinctive nose air intake from France,
Germany and England but not Holland! Based on these shots the proportions
don't look bad and this detail at least is correct. |
Each kit has a different body casting to capture the small differences
in vents and intakes. What is common to all of these is the fairly
well detailed engine, but it is cast largely in one piece, including
wiring, which will make detail painting interesting. Still, life's
boring if it's too easy! |

The main body castings in these kits have been created with openings
in the rear quarters and top of the airbox, which allows the majority
of the same parts to be used for both. The inserts for these areas
are then tailored to the particular race version. The kit is well
thought out and the castings are very fine, with just a small amount
of flash to be removed. There is a small amount of p/e for the suspension
grilles, seat belt furniture and a few other sundry items, which include
pre-shaped inserts for the wheels. The instructions are almost entirely
in Japanese but do include fairly clear assembly drawings. With these
and reference to race photos (Autocourse - ISBN1903135206), very attractive
models will be the result. In Malaysia Button finished 7th after Schumi
Sr nipped by on the last lap, while team leader Villeneuve's car failed
to start the race. By the last race of the season in Japan Sato had
been named as Villeneuve's replacement for the following season and
the Canadian decided he didn't want to play any more. In the race
Button finished 4th and Sato 6th, the best result for the team all
season. |

Competition Style Tyre Valve (x12)
|
£3.75
|
|
Among the smaller parts in the kits above are beautiful machined tyre
valves. These are also available separately to replace those eaten
by the carpet monster or to add a little detail to many other models.
A must for the detail modeller's spares box. |
