After a break of a couple of months Racing 43 are back with a bang and with plenty to keep rally fans occupied. The basic parts of these kits will be familiar to many and the overall shapes and body details are generally very good.
A little more preparation work than usual will be needed on the Sanremo Subaru as there are mounting holes in the roof for the cockpit air scoop not used on this event and quite a lot of porosity in the surface, both of which will need filling and sanding. Otherwise the kit looks very good though curiously decals are only included for Petter Solberg and not Tommi Makinen. With the number of Finnish collectors out there this is rather short-sighted. We also aren’t completely convinced by the suggested Fiat Midnight blue colour, try Tamiya TS50 instead.
There are no obvious problems on the Peugeot from the same event with the castings up to R43’s usual high standards and decals included for all three works cars, not just Panizzi’s winner.
Both Sainz and McRae are included on the decal sheet for the Focus, but whichever version you go for the body will need two-tone paint and the blue sections must be matched to the decal sheet. All of the photos we’ve found of this car (Rallycourse, Pirelli World Rallying, Rally yearbook, Autosport & Auto Hebdo!)

show the car with a multi-spoke wheel design rather than the older 5-spoke items in the kit. As we’ve said before with rally kits, wheels get changed so often during events so they might be different stage by stage.
Italian ace Andrea Aghini drove the very pretty Zuchetti backed Peugeot to victory in Madeira and we can see no obvious problems with this particular kit, with the decoration and body details checking out well with photos.
The Subaru Italia Impreza of Navara which won on the Adriatic rally is also very attractive with its orange and blue colour scheme but the question of wheel size which has been a problem in the past pops up again. The pattern of the wheel is for a gravel event but the rim diameter works out closer to an 18” tarmac item than 15” or 16” as used on the rough stuff. A nice kit otherwise.
We then return to works machinery with this year’s Citroen. The decals offer the options for Loeb, McRae or Sainz but apart from some very fine pinstripes all of the colours must be masked and sprayed. Not such a problem for the red and white but the blue, especially around the rear bumper, shows that somebody at Racing 43 clearly has a sense of humour.

Also from the 2003 Monte, the new look Peugeot has all three works drivers on the decal sheet and the choice of decorating the car as seen in Monaco with full sponsorship or in censored form as it ran on the French stages.
The three Saxo kits all feature very well cast resin bodyshells with similar metal and p/e ancillaries to the usual R43 kits. All are class winners with Dallavilla driving in Sanremo, Loeb in Spain 2001 and Sola on the 2002 event.
This last version we have seen before as these same parts were released under the Portal 43 banner.
Back with metal kits, the WRC version of the Peugeot is extremely similar to the Sanremo kit but with the supplementary decal only offering Panizzi’s winning car and not the other two works drivers. The same happens with the Subaru, which celebrates Solberg’s first WRC win on the RAC but doesn’t give any other driver options.
The two S1600 cars are very attractive with Cedric Robert’s German class winning Peugeot wearing a similar blue and red livery to the semi-works WRC entries and the Punto in what we imagine to be a good looking red and white with silver stripes. We say imagine, because we don’t have a photo of this particular car and the instructions are, as usual from Racing 43, entirely in black and white.

This is only a small selection of the releases from new boys ABD so we have had to split them across more than one issue. All of the sheets are very clearly printed with even the smallest flag decals crisp and in register. The subjects are, generally speaking, very colourful though there are three plain white 635s.

Of these the Eterna car was driven to victory by Rossi and Quester at Monza, while Grohs and Ravaglia had a 1-2 finish at Zolder. The instructions for all include 5-view drawings for decal placement and also suggest suitable wheels from the Scala 43 range (available from GPM of course!). Colour information is given in German only but the illustrations will help if you don’t speak the language. For base models on all of the 635s we would use one of Jemmpy’s pre-painted resin kits which can be found at www.grandprixmodels.com. Most of these are already finished in white, which is great for most of these but the Bob Jane car will need painting orange and for the black JPS and Lease Plan machines, use JEM112. Other choice schemes are the 1983 Eggenberger car and the classic 1984 Original Teile x-ray livery.

Now we know that the number of die-casts creeping into these pages is increasing and that we are generally fairly sniffy about them, but at the moment these are the only way that collectors are going to get some great subjects. And what subjects the Japanese GT Championship throws up! The general standard of finish is very good with clear liveries and fine paint finishes, the wheels are not bad at all and the only real problem is the rather heavy rear wing supports.

For those feeling so inclined, the wheels can be replaced with one of the aftermarket sets shown on our website (search ‘wheels’ in category field) and if you are really determined the rear wings look as if they could be persuaded to come off and have the supports thinned down a little. As they stand, once removed from the (not terribly nice) plastic boxes, they won’t look out of place in most cabinets anyway.
