Sports Racing Cars, Expert Assessment £25.00
weight 1.4kg by Anthony Pritchard

Calling a book an 'expert assessment' may seem a little pompous, but when the statement is made by one of the best known motor racing historians currently writing then it is perhaps fair! With any book of this type, we may not all agree on which are the greatest but many of the indisputable favourites are here such as the Alfa Romeo 8Cs, Porsche 917 & 956/962, Jaguar C, D and XJR8/9/12. One that we think should be in there is the all conquering Audi R8, which isn't, though the Bentley EXP8 is. Each car type has it's own chapter of a few pages with a history, both technical and sporting, illustrated with excellent period photography.

The Amazing Summer of '55 £17.99
weight 800g by Eoin Young

It may not be obvious at first but 1955 was a pivotal year in the history of motor racing and the motoring world in general. Eoin Young takes us on an absorbing wander through many of the most important moments of this year. The summer of 1955 saw Moss & Jenks win the Mille Miglia at an average of 100mph, Alberto Ascari surviving taking his Lancia for a swim in the Monaco harbour, only to die in testing a few days later, the Le Mans tragedy that had a profound effect on motor racing for years to come and much more including the demise of one of Hollywood's greatest young stars at the wheel of a Porsche on the way to a race meeting. It's all fascinating and thought provoking stuff.

Louis Rosier, Une Vie Extraordinaire £40.00
weight 1.5kg by Pascal Legrand

One of France's greatest drivers began his top level competition career in the late 1930s. This was then interrupted by the war and during this time the young man, like many others, made himself a thorn in the side of the occupying forces in France. After hostilities had ceased his racing career resumed and lasted well into the 1950s. He was also an entrant, pilot and businessman and this full life is examined here in some detail, illustrated throughout with over 200 very atmospheric photographs.

Stirling Moss Scrapbook 1955 £34.95
weight 2.3kg by Philip Porter

Based on the diaries and scrap books kept by Stirling Moss during his very successful 1955 season, this is a light-hearted look at motor racing in the mid 50s from a unique perspective. The various cuttings and photographs are superbly reproduced to tell the story of the season and are interspersed with often pithy comments from Moss, whether regarding encountering Isettas on the Mille Miglia with closing speeds of approaching 150mph, his competitors or the 'crumpet status'.

Alfetta, Alfa Romeo 158 & 159 £19.95
weight 1.1kg by Ed McDonough

Who better to write the history of Alfa Romeo's World Championship winning 158 & 159 Grand Prix machines than motoring historian and ex-Chairman of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Ed McDonough? The result is a carefully researched, well written history of the cars and the people involved. Much use of the Alfa Romeo archive has been made and there are a wealth of period photographs included. Some of these images are showing their age a little, which is apparent in the reproduction. These are more than made up for by the colour section, which includes a few period race shots and then several of a restored car including many close up details and a few of the author driving the car.

Aston Martin £19.99
weight 2.3kg by Schlegelmilch, Lehbrink & von Osterroth

Published by Konemann, this is a lavish photographic celebration of Aston Martin, from the original 'Green Pea' racer of 1922 to the DB9. If you're after a definitive history of the marque, this isn't it, but it does show all of the major production models and examples of the various purpose built racers. The photography is, as we always expect from the lens of Herr Schlegelmilch, exceptional and the book offers a great introduction to this famous British marque. As with most Konemann publications the text is in more than one language, in this case English, German and French. Great value.

The Ford That Beat Ferrari £75.00
weight 2.6kg by John Allen & Gordon Jones

Twenty years after it was first published, Allen & Jones's much sought after history of the GT40 makes a welcome re-appearance. It tells the story of the GT40 from the first prototype stages right through production and all of the major racing activities in the 1960s. The main difference between this and the various other GT40 histories that will make it valuable to modellers in particular is that it is very much a pictorial history. There's a look behind the scenes to see what support was given to the numerous private teams who ran the cars and there are also details of the teams themselves and which cars they entered for which events. This isn't just a straight reprint as it has been updated and revised to include more new colour photographs and a chapter on Ford's retro road car, the GT. If you missed out before, don't let it happen again!
