Recent F1 kits

Dear FSW,
I thought that you might be interested in seeing how the Silverline BAR006 from the Japanese GP looks built up.
The kit is of the usual Silverline standard and builds relatively easily. My only comment would be, and this applies to all current1/43rd scale F1 kits, the side pod mounted air deflector always looks too thick when produced in white metal. I know that these kits are produced to high standards these days but I feel that they may look better if produced from vac-form or pre-pressed thin brass sheet. Maybe the production costs are too great for this?
I have finished the kit off with some Denizen figures and a grid slot base. Denizen figures used are RD14 – Manager, RD69 – Driver and RG4 – Grid Girl.

Regards,
Warren Monks, Doncaster, S Yorks.

Australian 250F

Dear FSW
I don't know if this is of any help to you, but I noticed in the latest FSW 04-2005, page 8 Modellismo Leonardo - you review a kit supposedly of a Maserati 250F being driven by Stan Jones in the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne in 1957.
The Australian Grand Prix for 1957 was held in Caversham, Western Australia. I have a colour photograph of Stan Jones (Alan's dad) driving the Maserati 250F during that race, but the car bears the #1, not #10 as indicated in the Modellismo Leonardo review of kit MLK 4335.
In 1956 the Australian Grand Prix was held at Albert Park, Melbourne. There were 6 Maserati 250F's entered
#1 Jean Behra
#4 Ken Wharton
#5 Reg Hunt
#7 Stirling Moss
#8 Stan Jones (Alan's dad)
Also shown as a non-starter was
#10 Jack Brabham - perhaps this is the car modelled?

A.Nonymous, Australia

Or is it?......

Dear sir,
With reference to Modellismo Leonardo kit MLK4335 (Page 8, FSW 4/2005). I believe that this is in fact Bib Stilwell driving the ex Reg Hunt car ( #2516) in the New Zealand Grand Prix, January 1959, just prior to selling it to Arnold Glass.
Hope this clears up the matter.

It would of course make life so much simpler if the makers had clearly indicated exactly what it was they had made. - Ed

Chris Nixon

Dear FSW,
I was very sad to hear of the recent passing of motor racing historian and author, Chris Nixon. I had the pleasure of taking lunch with Mr Nixon in New York a while ago, when he was over here researching his Aston Martin vs Ferrari book and he showed particular interest in the Astons in my model collection.
I remember him as being very engaging, a delightful man and very generous with information. A real pleasure to be around.

Thanks,
Tom Nathan, Hartsdale, NY

Diablo Roadster

Dear FSW,
I was interested to see the Lamborghini Diablo Roadster R in the latest FSW (MRC165M). This car was part of a splashy PR effort at the 1997 Sebring 12 Hours, in an attempt to launch a US-based one-make series for '97-99 based on the new Diablo Roadster, patterned after the Lamborghini Supersport Trophy series (which yielded several very nice Diablo models). The proposed series was to debut at Le Mans in '97.
I picked up a copy of the prospectus/press kit at Sebring, and dug it out when I saw FSW 5/05. Attached please find a photo of mine of the car on display. Apparently, the promoters failed to attract sufficient subscribers to actually build the cars and put the series together, because the prototype was the only car built and the series never happened.
