Motor Racing, Reflections of a Lost Era £35.99
weight 1.6kg by Anthony Carter
During
a house move a few years ago, Anthony Carter rediscovered his long forgotten
collection of photographs taken at various race circuits
covering a period of 20 years from the mid-fifties to the mid-seventies.
The pick of these superbly preserved images have been brought together
here to give a charming personal view of motor racing during a much
more relaxed time, when F1 teams prepared the cars beneath awnings on
the sides of their trucks and Joe Public was allowed to mix with his
heroes. There are plenty of ideas for dioramas in here and it was a
close call between this and the Mailander book for book of the month.

The Magic World of the Diorama £34.99
weight 1.4kg By Jean-Claude Baudier
Visitors to Retromobile over the past few years will have seen the work
of Jean-Claude Baudier and in this book he shows, in detail many of
his dioramas. The photographs used throughout are excellent and highlights
the attention to detail which is put into the scenes by this very talented
modeller. There is also huge variety of subject matter, from Le Mans
in the 1930s to the deserts of the Dakar in the 1990s. This is really
a celebration of the dioramas themselves, though some of the techniques
involved are described. If you are looking for inspiration to bring
your models alive, this is fascinating. French & English text.

Motor Racing at Crystal Palace £12.99
weight 700g by S.S. Collins
These little books from Veloce are turning into a fascinating series,
as local authors take a look at venues and events from a far more personal
viewpoint than established authors may do. This time it's the turn of
Crystal Palace in south London which hosted a wide variety of bicycle,
motorcycle, car and kart races between 1899 and 1972. It's not greatly
informative, results-wise, but very interesting none the less.

Lancia Beta Montecarlo £16.99
weight 800g by Bruno Vettore
This
soft bound title tells the story of Lancia's Montecarlo (Scorpion for
our American readers) from early prototype stage through to production.
Separate chapters examine the dramatic Group 5 Turbo race cars and the
Monte Carlo based 037 Rally and there is a final section on ownership
today including what looks like a brief guide of where to look for corrosion
if considering buying one (personal experience of Italian cars of this
era is to look everywhere, even on the plastic bits!). There are excellent
factory drawings and photographs throughout to bring it all to life.

Mercedes Benz and the Mille Miglia £20.00
weight 1.4kg by Andrea Curami
Mercedes won the great Mille Miglia race twice, in 1931 and 1955, and
entered on many more occasions. Following a similar format to Curami's
study of Porsches in the same event (ISBN8879113208) this tells the
story of the races involved and is packed with period photographs of
all of the Mercedes which took part, whether the exotic prototypes such
as the 300SLR or the production saloons entered in the diesel class
in the 1950s. There are also numerous chassis drawings and close up
photographs to support the well written Italian and English text.

Formula 1 in Camera 1980-89 £30.00
weight 1.6kg by Rainer Schlegelmilch
Rainer Schlegelmilch is one of the greatest motor racing photographers
of all time and this collection of images highlights one of the most
dramatic decades in F1's history. The 1980s saw political turmoil, huge
changes in regulations and technology and increased commercialisation.
The vivid photographs capture the highs and lows of the seasons with
the best of the action both on track and behind the scenes. There are
also plenty of good pitlane and paddock close ups which will be of interest
to modellers.
