New 1:20th high detail metal kits
HIR032 Ferrari 156 World Champion 1961 1:20 £173.80
HIR033 Ferrari 156 Belgium 1961 1:20 £173.80
HIR034 Ferrari 156 Monaco 1961 1:20 £173.80
These three very impressive kits are well cast and capture most of the details of the legendary Sharknose superbly. The suspension will be very realistic once completed, the minor vent detail and other bodywork adaptations have been well captured and beneath the removable tail there is a beautifully detailed engine and gearbox. Decals are included for Hill, von Trips, Ginther and Baghetti in the Monza kit, the first three of these drivers for Spa and Ginther alone for Monaco as the other cars had the 65â engine in this race. Unfortunately with all of the kits Hiro have fallen into the same trap that MG did when they released their 1:12th scale model a couple of years back. The roll-over bar was fitted to the chassis cross-member directly behind the seat and rose out of the cockpit opening, not through the bodywork as both kit manufacturers have done. There are loads of photos in various Ferrari F1 books if you don’t have Ed McDonough’s ‘Ferrari 156 Sharknose’ (ISBN0750927313) and with reference to these it will be possible to modify the front body section and slightly re-profile the white metal hoop itself. They’re still damn fine kits and well worth the little extra work, although at this price it really shouldn’t be necessary.
New 1:43rd resin and metal high detail hand built
MRCBOS001 Lamborghini Diablo GTR 1999 Met Orange £524.95
The Diablo is something very special indeed. We thought we’d seen enough Diablo’s from MR to last a lifetime but hadn’t reckoned on their teaming up with the legendary Vincenzo Bosica. We’ve seen high detail Lamborghini models from MR before in their MRX range but those have always had the panels fixed open. This model features fully opening doors, engine cover and front hatch, each of which fits snugly when closed and open on miniature telescopic rams for absolute authenticity. With the panels open we are treated to a full interior, complete with roll cage and a beautifully detailed engine. The car is painted in flawless Lamborghini metallic orange and presented on a leather base signed by Mr Bosica himself. Superb.

New 1:43rd resin & metal kit
CCC173 Hotchkiss Gregoire Street 1952 £51.65
We keep banging on about duplication of subjects and the need for truly individual models in these pages, well this one is certainly individual. The Hotchkiss company bought the design for this front-wheel drive saloon from J.A.Gregoire in the late 1940s. Production was short lived with just 247 cars produced between June 1951 and November 1952. The kit captures the lines very well though there are odd pin holes to deal with in the resin castings, but nothing too serious. The bonnet is a separate fine casting and reveals a well detailed flat-4 engine made from a combination of very fine metal and resin parts. Perhaps not what most would consider the most attractive subject to grace these pages and the kit may take a bit of work but the effort will be rewarded with a fine model of an interesting piece of French motoring history.

ISBN8879601466 Peter Coltrin, Racing in Colour £89.99
weight 2.1kg
text by Chris Nixon
Peter Coltrin’s colour photographs have lain unseen for the best part of 50 years but following his untimely passing in 1982 they passed to the Klemantaski Collection where they were unearthed by Chris Nixon. The quality of the images is absolutely incredible especially when we consider that some of these were taken nearly 50 years ago. We start at El Mirage in 1954 and these could have been taken earlier this year on modern film, the colours are so vivid. Several races are covered in the USA from 1954 to 1958 and there are detailed studies of various European races from 1957 to 1959 including the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, the Nurburgring 1000kms and numerous Grands Prix. When you consider the cost of colour film and print in the 1950s and that Coltrin was basically an amateur photographer the results are even more impressive. Absolutely brilliant!
