New 1:43rd metal kit
TMK330 Ferrari F2003-GA 1st Spain 2003

£43.15

TMK331 Ferrari F2003-GA Monaco/Canada 2003

£44.70

When looking at the press launch version of the F2003 we commented that Tameo have been able to reduce the number of p/e parts due to the very fine castings they now have for barge-boards etc. The main element of these devices may be metal in this kit, but the shape is so complex that there are four p/e parts to add to each one!
This sort of attention to detail is typical of Tameo and this will be a great build, if you haven’t tired of red cars by now! Spain was the first race for this new design and Schumacher continued Ferrari’s recent tradition of winning first time out with the new car. It’s now every year since 1999 that they’ve done it! Tameo could justifiably have released two kits for the Monaco and Canadian GPs but have instead included two sets of parts for the wings and barge boards. It is this sort of attention to detail that has made Tameo the leaders in 1:43rd scale F1 kits..
New 1:43rd resin & metal kit
CRM003 Williams FW23 1st Brazil/San Marino 2001

£44.05

Using similar parts to the FW23B we saw last issue, this well thought out kit should build very well.
The resin body and metal ancillaries are well cast, there are masking lines lightly cast into the body for the two tone paint finish and a paper masking template. A paint chip is supplied to match the metallic blue and clearly printed decals include all of the sponsorship. The small amounts of carbon fibre decal for the wing endplates aren’t terribly convincing so you may prefer to use these as templates for something a little more realistic (BBD014). While the carbon decal is out, the fine p/e suspension components might enjoy some too. Take your time and the end result will be a fine model, whether you choose Montoya’s race leading Brazilian car or Ralf’s San Marino winner.
New 1:43rd metal kit
TMS006 Jordan EJ13 1st Brazil 2003

£47.35

When we announced that this kit was coming in our news pages a couple of issues back we erroneously said it was to be made by Tameo. They do handle the distribution but Silverline are an independent company. With any new F1 kit comparisons with the market leaders are inevitable however.
The metal castings are to a very similar standard and the shape looks very good for Jordan’s 200th GP start and Fisichella’s first GP win. The kit is relatively simple with p/e parts for the suspension wishbones, sidepod winglets, front wing mount, wheel centres and one or two other smaller pieces. The bulk of the other parts are white metal castings, including the brake units, and the double sided A4 colour instruction sheet clearly shows where everything goes. A single small decal sheet includes all of the sponsorship and the option of either driver, though if you are used to seeing carbon fibre suspension you’ll have to add it (BBD014). Tamiya colours are specified throughout but the flourescent yellow suggested for the main colour is wrong. This years car is just a good bright solid yellow. Overall the kit looks good and it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

We’re at a bit of a loss to describe these. Each pack contains lengths of precision made stainless steel tubing or wire. The larger diameter tubes will be ideal for 1:43rd exhaust tail pipes and the smaller ones for various hard plumbing like the exposed radiator tubes on 1960s F1 cars, fuel injector rails, plug lead sleeves, etc. Or how about a real spaceframe chassis? The possibilities are endless.

Alan Mann Racing built two lightweight GT40s with aluminium panelling which made their race debuts at Sebring. The re-issued kit (TEN079) captures the lines of these cars, with their extra intakes, very well and offers decal options for either the Hill/Stewart #24 or Whitmore/Gardner #25 machines. The resin castings are good and the decals well printed, though the white metal wheel inserts are showing their age and the Halibrand wheels that this car ran look pretty poor. Fortunately Sprint 43 make decent etched Halibrands (SPRY002) and with these fitted you’ll have a very nice model of an unusual racer. The cars were sold on soon after Sebring and used with some success by Paul Hawkins and Escuderia Montjuic. Hawkins made new fibreglass bodywork for his car so that it would be eligible for Group 4 racing and Tenariv have again picked up all the small details well. The other cars offered in the remaining GT40 kits all used Hawkins panels though none of the drivers enjoyed much success in the events modelled.

To quote the driver, Chris Amon, the car was ‘bloody hopeless’ though Ford were convinced that it was one of the world’s best drivers that was under-performing at Riverside and tried to replace him. Marsh have captured this heroic failure very well with their usual combination of resin, metal and p/e. The team were constantly trying to improve the car during the race weekend and, while the decals capture all of the decoration superbly and the p/e parts include the wider front and rear spoilers, one photo we have (Friedman ‘Shelby GT40’ MBI) shows additional small tabs below the headlamps which you may wish to add. These other subjects all use the BRM 6-spoke wheel and while the metal wheel inserts in the kits look pretty rough they should clean OK if you take a little time over them. The end result of this work will be several very attractive models.
Most of the single seaters are also re-issues. The Matra MS9 is the Caltex sponsored machine which was completed just 1 week before the South African Grand Prix. The car was a modified F2 chassis and raced in green primer, a detail that Tenariv have picked up on in their instructions despite appearances to the contrary in their colour photos! Overall the shape looks good and these kits usually build well, though the tyres leave a little to be desired and there are no tyre sidewall decals. In the race Stewart was running with the leaders when a con-rod decided to leave through the block. By the American GP the Matra-Ford was somewhat more reliable and, apart from the first lap, Stewart led all the way to the finish.
We knew nothing about the results for the F3 Alpines but thankfully Tenariv give results in the well drawn colour instructions. The first kit offers the option of the 3rd placed car of Guitteny from the French F3 championship at Rouen and also the Mountain Championship winner of Andruet, who had apparently turbo-charged his car by the end of the season, though no turbo is included in this version. The next kit (another re-issue) offers the 1st & 2nd placed Rouen cars, Depailler’s Monaco winner and Jabouille’s Nurburgring mount.

Finally we have Marianne Hoepfner’s vivid pink car which we showed on the front cover of FSW 6/2003. All of these Alpine kits share similar parts and the tyres are much better than in the Matras. You will still need tyre decals though, TMKDG001 or VIR102 will probably cover most, if not all, of the subjects here.
