We’re used to seeing huge quantities of decal sheets and accessories arriving in one go from Studio 27, but can’t remember when they last released so many kits in one month!
Admittedly five of these are variations on one basic model, the Tyrrell 007, which was a works entry in 1975 and early ‘76 before passing into private hands, in the days when such things were not merely allowed, but actively encouraged in F1. No race versions are specified for the works cars but the general shape looks pretty good and major body changes between the two years have been well observed. We don’t have photos of the privateer cars but know that the attractive looking Gulf car was driven by Pesenti-Rossi who failed to qualify in Holland but finished 11th in Austria and 14th in Germany. All three options are offered in the kit. A two-tone paint finish will also be needed for this subject, while the others are all single colour with any stripes provided on the excellent decal sheets. In all of these Tyrrell kits there are well detailed DFV engines and all of them will make attractive models.
Moving on to the modern cars, Studio 27 appear once again to be trying to bring us the whole grid which must be commended. Some thoughtful modelling on the BAR gives us the option of different race versions with adjustments to the small winglets found on the side pods, but the only part of the caption on the predominantly Japanese instructions we can decipher here is ‘GP’. Photos we have don’t show enough consistent detail for us to be able to identify a specific race.
Reference material for the Spanish GP winning Ferrari is rather better and the kit looks pretty good with very finely cast ancillaries for the wings and barge boards. Like the BAR, the Sauber doesn’t have a race version specified but the overall impression is of a pretty good kit and Studio 27 are now at least including decals for the ‘Petronas blue’ panels on the sides of the car, though you’ll have to mix your detailing paints to match for the front wing endplates. While the decals are well printed in these kits all of the modern F1s would really benefit from the addition of carbon fibre (STUFP002).

The accessory decal sheets are all printed to the very high standard we have become used to from Studio 27. Most are for older Tamiya kits and include the options of several liveries with complete sponsorship. In the case of the Jordan every race version for the season is possible as well as the black test car, though you will also need several sheets of carbon fibre (STUFP002) if you take this route. We’re not sure what kit the Stratos decals are for though and some major modifications will be needed if using the Hasegawa kit.

The recent release of Tamiya’s Williams FW24 (TAM20055) has created excitement for modellers and accessory manufacturers alike. The kit includes loads of detail but there’s always space for a few extras! The first sheet offers several late season race versions and includes some of the white panels not on the Tamiya sheet to make masking simpler. It also has all of the sponsors and drivers names including test drivers Gene and Rosberg.
The second sheet is a simple additive so that the early season cars can be made with Compaq rather than HP sponsorship. The Hi Tech decal sheet contains all of the sponsors logos, both early and late season, but no stripes of any kind, and are intended as direct replacements for most of the original kit decals.
Even if you’re happy with the decals in your Tamiya kit, how about some super-fine etched details. The p/e sheet includes grilles, seat belts, brake details, various panel fasteners, barge boards and an ignition wiring harness.

New 1:24th & 1:20th resin & metal kits
HIR24035 Ferrari 500TR Le Mans 1958 #25 1:24

£121.90

HIR24026 Ferrari 512M LM/Daytona Sunoco 1:24

£173.80

Somewhat simpler than the pontoon fendered 250TR’s released by Hiro, the 4-cylinder 500TR kit still offers plenty for the modeller. The resin body and base plate are crisply cast and with the addition of white metal inserts for the front wing area accurately capture the lines of the car driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jean Behra at Le Mans.

High quality metal ancillaries offer a good level of suspension and cockpit detail. The wire wheels are in kit form with turned alloy rims and p/e spokes and an additional p/e sheet offers various fine details including the ‘egg-box’ grilles for the front air intake.
The 512 kit shares very similar parts to those reviewed in FSW 4/2003 and offer the opportunity to build a highly detailed miniature of one of the best looking sports-racing cars of all time. A wealth of metal and p/e parts build into a complete chassis frame and drive train, while the finely cast resin body sections fit together almost perfectly straight from the box and will need minimal clean-up. Decals are offered for the Sunoco backed machine as raced at either Daytona or Le Mans and look to be just about spot on. There are plenty of etched parts to finish off but one detail that has been missed is the fuel return pipe to the front of the left hand door (the Penske team used a pressurised filler system rather than a gravity feed to speed up pit stops).

As usual from Acu.Stion, these etched frets are beautifully produced and will add significantly to whichever plastic kit they are being fitted to.
The Bike set includes brake discs, grilles, various Honda badges, tyre stencils and some little bits we can’t identify! The fuel filler set includes p/e blanking rings and a multi-piece turned filler which will look very realistic once assembled, while the F1 brake discs are to be assembled from several layers of p/e. The etched detail frets for the 1:24th kits also include various grilles, wipers, seat belt furniture and facings for the plastic brake discs in the base kits. If you wish to go a little further on the Enzo there are fully detailed vented discs, complete with bearing housings, the superb turned shock absorbers have springs and p/e mounting brackets and so that you can see all of the brake and suspension detail, how about fitting the wheels on proper threaded stub-axles with real wheel nuts!? Finally, if the plain red colour scheme is a little plain, how about the decoration for the promotional car used by Japanese Ferrari importer Cornes..
