Chevy Corvette L88 Daytona 1968 #44

£44.05

We took a look at the hand built versions of all of these subjects last time round and know that they build very attractive, if not totally accurate, models. The overall shapes are very good and the panel engraving on the resin castings is carefully done. There are a few bubbles in the castings but these are all in places that will be invisible once the models are completed. The race number decals in the Ferraris are slightly out of scale, though the designs are spot on and those building the Corvette kit will probably want to change the tyre sidewall decals (MM333). Otherwise they’re fine.

EMB009

Lancia Fulvia 2C Fiori 1965 #96 Jolly

£44.00

These two reasonably well made kits share very similar parts to make the near identical team cars form the Rally dei Fiori (Sanremo). The bodies are cast in a waxy yellow resin and have very crisp engraving, though there are a few bubbles around the lower edges and a fair amount of flash.
The smaller castings are very clean and a good level of p/e detail for the exterior includes window frames. With a little effort these relatively simple kits should build well.

BMW 320 Gr5 Ring 1000kms 1983 Jagermeister

£59.45

COMD94

BMW 635CSI DRM 1984 Jagermeister Decals

£6.60

We’re big fans of Group 5 cars around here, as they were spectacular machines and make great subjects. Likewise, the Jagermeister livery also looks good. It is possible to have too much of a good thing though, with Competition 43 making what appears to be every race version!

Champagne’s all well and good but we do like a glass of water occaisionally.... The castings in this particular kit are better than those in some we’ve seen previously and with a little time, the end result will be a well detailed model with the bonnet open to reveal the engine. We can’t help but feel that several of these cars could have been offerd from one multi-option kit.
We’re getting to feel much the same way about Jagermeister backed 635s as well. Especially as these decal sheets all seem to use the same basic (ex-Scala 43) main sheet with small additional pieces for the particular race version and are very well printed.

March 86 IMSA 1986 #18/19 BMW

£46.85

Produced in the Czech Republic, this reasonably well cast resin kit bears a striking resemblance to a long since deleted French model of the same subject.
The castings will need some significant feed tags removed but there are no bubbles to worry about and it’s all very simple. The decals are well printed and include the option of either the Watkins Glen winning #18 Junior Team car or the #19 Senior car which retired from the same race.

GPMBL102

Ferrari 158 World Champion 1964

£865.00

Based on the superb Meri super-kit released last summer and reviewed in FSW 8/2002, this beautifully finished miniature has been lovingly built for us in Italy. The model is built as Surtees’ Italian GP winner and is tastefully presented on a chamfered glass base.

Trestles are included for the main top body section so that all of the fine chassis detail remains visible. A very impressive piece that will make a superb centrepiece to an F1 champs or Ferrari F1 collection.

The first subject here is one that Le Mans collectors have been crying out for for many years, the previously un-modelled Mazda RX3/124A which was an unlikely looking entry to the 1975 race.
This was the first Mazda to take the start, though their engines had been used in Chevron and Sigma chassis’ previously, and was basically a production car. The kit captures the shape and decoration of the car well and will be a simple build, though we’re not convinced that the car would have raced with the passenger seat in place. Of course if anyone has photos to the contrary we’re happy to be proved wrong, otherwise you’ll need to take a scalpel and remove it from the floorpan.
Unlike earlier versions of the M1 from Mini Racing the blue Hawaiian Tropic car has the various Naca ducts moulded into the body instead of as decals, though the ancillary parts seem to be the same metal parts that were in the first releases several years ago.
These will clean up fine with a little effort and add that extra bit of weight to the model that many like. The decals are well printed and the end result will be an attractive model.
For the third year in succession Shekha Mehta won the Safari rally in his Datsun Violet and the kit captures this 1981 car very well. The base colour of this model is red with the blue and white sections applied as decals, so we hope that the white sections are heavily enough printed not to let the colour bleed through. We’ll let you know when we see the built model, which will no doubt be fairly soon and it looks OK in the colour picture of the completed model that passes for an instruction sheet in these kits. Carrying on with another of Mini Racing’s mini-themes, the Lotus-Sunbeam is wearing the familiar works colouring but with a slight difference.

When Peugeot took over/merged with Chrysler Europe all cars previously badged as Chryslers became Talbots. This early car wears the usual blue stripes but Chrysler instead of Talbot on the sponsorship.
Finally we have the Porsche 914/6 in road trim. The shape looks good and the built model shows that it all goes together well. For those opting for the built model there is still a little to do as the wipers and mirrors will need attaching.
