Regarding your
story "A Le Mans rarity from 1953" by David Blumlein in
FSW 07, I thought that I could add some words to the story.
The present owner of
the Borgward Rennsport is a man named Lars-Erik Larsson and lives
in the south of Sweden. As you can see from my photos from Le Mans
Classic 2002 he likes to take his car to the track too.

 |
But please note one thing on the photos: The
car carries Swedish licence plates and is street registered in track
specification !!! That is, no silencer whatsoever
The car is not in 100
% original spec since, as you noted in the article, the original
engines seized at Le Mans in 1953. When Lars-Erik found the car
there was no motor in it at all, but he built something similar,
using a Borgward TS motor to start with. Today it has more or less
the same hp and performance as the car had with it's original race
engine.
I can guarantee you
that Lars-Erik is a racer of the traditional cut. He doesn't put
much mileage on the car, but he takes it for a tour, off and on
the track, now and then.
 |
When he was asked to show the car on a classic
car expo once in Malmö, he drove the car from his home, to
the expo, straight up to the expo gate, flashed the headlights and
when the doorman opened the gate drove the car straight to his place
on the expo and parked the car. I don't know how many times the
cops stopped him, but each time he showed the car's papers showing
that he could use the car on the street without a silencer. After
he had gone over the car with a towel Lars-Erik and his Borgward
were ready to rock the expo. If anybody is cast from the same mould
as the original Le Mans team it is Lars-Erik!
|
He
inherited the interest early from his father who was a Borgward
dealer in the early sixties in Sweden. Lars-Erik has quite a nice
collection of cars from the Borgward group as well as other classics
as well.
Best regards, Björn Kellgren, Nantes, France
