Not
content with their own original releases, Model Factory Hiro have
also been making a concerted effort to bring other, older, high
detail resin kits back to the market. Over the past couple of months
we've seen a few subjects that were available several years ago under
the Climax range and now it is the turn of the excellent Ferrari
TR61s that were released by Q-Model some while back. The original
kits were very well detailed but these are not straight re-issues.
Those originals had detailed engines but you had to remove the body
to see the detail. Not now, Hiro have included finely cast bonnets
so that the wonderful detail can be easily seen. There are new photo-etched
parts and the general standard of production and presentation is
typical of what we are used to from Hiro. The first kit offers the
winning car of Hill/Gendebien from Le Mans and Sebring, as well as
the sister high-tailed Le Mans mount of the Rodriguez brothers. The
other kit has the low tail configuration and offers no fewer than
six decal options. |

Sauber C24 2005 1:20 - kit
|
£115.85
|
|
As
is often the case with Studio 27, no specific race version is indicated
for the Sauber kit so it is difficult to check the fine details such
as the aerodynamic
parts for accuracy. The overall quality of the kit is very good, with no bubbles
in the resin, crisp panel engraving and cleanly cast metal ancillaries. The decals
include the 'Petronas' blue stripes for the side pods and the white stripe for
the nose, but you will need to match paint to the blue for the front wing endplates
and also mask and paint the white airbox top. |

Ferrari F2005 2005 1:20 - kit
|
£121.20
|
|
The
kit parts for the Ferrari are in a similar style to the Sauber. This
time there are no tricky masking jobs to do as the decals include
most of the white
on the car. You'll need to paint the barge-boards but otherwise it's pretty straightforward.
All of these kits would benefit from the thoughtful addition of some carbon fibre
decals and there is plenty to choose from from Studio 27, Scale Motorsport and
others, just type Carbon into the "car type" search field in our online
shop. |

The
instructions for the transkits suggest using the 2000 Rossi version
of the NSR500 (TAM14082) as a base, but any of the 1998 versions
would work just as
well. The donor kit will provide the engine, frame, wheels and various other
parts, while the transkits include new fairings and seat moulding in resin, white
metal parts for the rear swing arm, brake parts and other suspension components,
a modest amount of p/e and of course decals. The works bike offers three decal
options, Doohan, Itoh or Beattie, while the Yamcha/Mr Donut machine was a wild
card entry in the Japanese GP for Norick Abe. The latter transkit also includes
decals for a rider figure, though you will have to find the man to put them on.
Heller do include rider figures with their 1:12th bikes and the sheet of rider
decals offer full decoration for Valentino Rossi in either 2003 Repsol Honda
colours or the blue of the Works Yamaha in 2004. |

| LMM4080
|
Alpine A210 Le Mans 1966 1:24. Also
available LMM4080PP - painted kit
|
£81.95
|
|
Most
of the larger scale Le Mans kits that we see are of the more powerful
GT and prototype cars that battle for overall supremacy
but occasionally we are treated to one or other of the smaller machines
that make up the great variety that characterises the grids of these
races. In 1966 Alpine followed Ford and Ferrari's leads and entered
a fleet of cars. Four of the six made it to the finish with the best
placed car (#62) classified 9th overall. All six cars are offered
as decal options and the kit parts capture this elegant, aerodynamic
design very well indeed. A paint chip is included to match the Alpine
blue and whichever version you go for will make a fine addition to
any Le Mans themed collection. |
|
|
If
you've made a mess of the wheels in your Le Mans Bugatti kit or perhaps
you have a die-cast Type 59 that you want to turn into a much better
model? LMM's
finely detailed etched wire wheels could well be the answer. |

Ferrari 500TRC Le Mans 1957 #29 kit

The
last of Ferrari's 2-litre 4-cylinder sports racing cars was also
one of the prettiest. Renaissance have captured the lines of this
attractive little car
very well in this simple kit. The main body and base plate castings have some
pretty heavy flash to remove but otherwise it all looks very straightforward.
The wheels are beautiful pre-assembled wires and the p/e parts have been well
thought out to include the, now common for Renaissance, 3-dimensional slot together
front grille. |

Citroen Xsara WRC MC 05 Stohl Transkit
1:24
|
£13.05

Manfred
Stohl's rally cars always look good with their sponsorship from Austrian
oil company OMV. His privately run Citroen Xsara has featured prominently this
year and he has scored a number of strong results including 6th place on the
Monte Carlo rally. This transkit is intended for the Heller Xsara kit (HEL80769)
and includes a resin rear spoiler, roof scoop, camera/GPS pod and mirrors as
well as clearly printed decals. |

Here's
a project for the more adventurous plastic kit modeller. The base
is a Fujimi kit (FUJ12163) and to start with there will be a moderate
amount of modification
to do to the donor vehicle including fitting a new rear spoiler and filling the
sunroof aperture, not to hard, just time consuming. The painting will take a
fair degree of skill though as the three colour finish has to be masked in jagged
lines. Black decal stripes are included to cover the masking and you will need
to transfer the shapes of these to your masking. |

Ducati Desmo Moto GP 04 D'Antin Decal
1:12
|
£11.60
|
|
This
decal set is intended for use with Heller's Ducatti kit (HEL80912)
and offers several options. The independent D'Antin team ran two
bikes for Ruben Xaus and
Neil Hodgson and the livery changed mid-season, so there are four possible versions.
Whichever you choose will need a multi-coloured masked paint finish. Xaus's mid-season
livery is shown here. |

Honda V5 Moto GP 05 Minolta Transkit
1:12
|
£41.25
|
|
This
transkit to make Makoto Tamada's very attractive Minolta sponsored
machine is intended for Tamiya's 2003 RC211V (TAM14097) and includes
a number of resin
parts to update the bike to the later specification. The instructions are restricted
to placement of the excellent decals and some paint details, but with the original
kit parts and instructions in front of you it should all be obvious which part
replaces what. |
|
|
|
|
Both
of these clearly printed decal sheets are intended for use with Tamiya
kits, TAM14059 in the case of the 250 and TAM14071/14072 in
the case of the 500. The latter will need some minor modifications
and there are dotted lines on the decal placement drawings to indicate
these, but it'll help if you read Japanese. |

G-Force-Penske 1st Indy 500 2003. Also
available FOR019M - built
|
£48.45
|
|
As
we said when looking at the hand built of this model in the last
issue, great care will be needed in matching the orange sections
of the livery to the decals. Masking lines are lightly moulded
into the body and some sections of the orange are included on the
clearly printed decals to make life easier for you. Otherwise it's
a typical Formula kit with excellent resin and metal castings and
a reasonable level of p/e. |
| FOR028
|
Panoz G-Force 1st Indy 500 2004. Also
available FOR028M - built
|
£48.45

|
The
core parts of this kit are very similar to the 2003 car and again
the model will need a two-tone paint finish. This time the masking
is simpler, being more
or less in straight lines and with large white decals to cover the joins. Formula
Models have asked us to correct an error in what we said last issue. The Danica
Patrick test car is not a general option in the kit, although most of the decals
are there. If you wish to build the Patrick version, please make sure we know
when you order and we will request the correct decals. |
