BMW M1/C Road Atlanta 1981 #2 - built

When
BMW realised that their M1 Procar racers weren't competitive in the
IMSA series they got together with March to produce a radical
new design. The car wasn't quick enough out of the box with the 6-cylinder
M1 engine, so this was quickly replaced with the turbo-charged 4-cylinder
from the Group 5 320i, churning out nearly 700bhp in IMSA form. Sadly
this fabulously ugly machine wasn't reliable enough to be competitive
and BMW's commitment went to F1. The kit is in Marsh's typical style,
with clean resin and metal castings and a good level of p/e detail
including the cockpit lining. During the decoration there are one
or two small areas where you will have to match paint to the decals
into the corners of vents etc and on the hand built model this has
been well done and overall the finished model is pretty accurate.
We would also suggest that kit builders paint the brass rear axle
either satin black or satin silver, as it is rather obvious in the
raw. The built model matches the two photos from Road Atlanta that
we have. |

After
Bruce McLaren acquired the Zerex Special from John Mecom he fitted
it with a 4-litre Oldsmobile V8 and in this form enjoyed much success.
As McLaren was
driving for Cooper in F1 at the time, the car was often called the Cooper-Oldsmobile.
Call it what you like, it's a fine looking machine and Marsh have done a very
good job of capturing the car as it appeared in its final race, the Goodwood
Tourist Trophy. The kit is relatively simple for a Marsh kit and includes a cast
cockpit liner, rather than a p/e one, so the build should be reasonably quick.
A colour chip is included to match the main body colour and our kit had two sets
of decals too. The hand built is finished to their usual high standards. |

Having
gained valuable experience and proved to be reasonably competitive
in Can-Am racing, the UOP Shadow team attacked the 1973 F1 season
with a very neat,
Cosworth powered machine in 1973. In this debut season they scored podium finishes,
not a bad start. They also supplied a chassis for Graham Hill to run under his
own team and this made its debut in Spain. These are Marsh Models' first single
seater kits and, as we are used to from this maker, the shape of the well cast
bodyshells look good. The ancillaries are also well thought out, with the familiar
photo-etched cockpit tub, very fine p/e suspension and multi-piece ventilated
brake discs. The decals are well printed and on the works cars they offer the
option of the Monaco cars as well as the Kyalami entries. If you do choose to
make the Monaco version then some real modelling will be required as the rear
of the car was different. We are sure most collectors will simply be glad to
have this important piece of F1 history in their collections, the advanced orders
certainly suggested that was the case, and will build straight from the box! |

Shadow MK3 Can-Am 1972 Also available MM131M - built

It's a good month for Shadow fans! For those who prefer their wheels
covered we have the car which Jackie Oliver qualified in 4th place
for the 1972 Mosport
Can-Am race. The car may have been quick, but sadly reliability let it down.
It did look good though and makes a great model subject. The castings are excellent
as usual and once you have achieved a decent black paint finish there are plenty
of fine decals to keep the builder happy for hours. |

At
long last, the kits of the F5000 Lolas have arrived! We saw first
hand built versions in FSW 7/2005 and were impressed enough to make
them models of the month. They are made for Yank by Formula Models
and the kits are just what expect to see. The main bodies are beautifully
cast in resin, there are white metal and resin ancillaries and three
sheets of superb photo-etch for the chassis tub, suspension and wing
endplates etc. On Andretti's Viceroy backed Riverside car the larger
section of the red livery has to be painted, while the more intricate
parts are supplied as decal. It is therefore very important to match
the red exactly to the decal.
The hand builts are both beautifully finished and if your own efforts
are anywhere close in terms of finish you will have fine models in
your collection. |

The
contents of these kits are extremely similar, with the main difference
being the decals. The basis is a typically well cast
resin body to which is added a selection of small cast and photo-etched
ancillaries. The decals are clearly printed and as is usual for
Formula kits wearing this livery a two-tone paint finish will be
needed. The decals do have a fine stripe to cover the masking line
and to aid masking there are very subtle marks on the resin body
casting. We've already seen these built and know that they can
look very good. |

BBP158 - kit

This
attractive blue and white roadster was driven to victory at Bridgehampton
by Bill Spear. The model is everything that we expect
from BBR, with excellent paint and carefully applied detailing complementing
an accurate looking body shape. Only 200 examples of this hand built
are being made, so be quick. |

This
is remarkably the first hand built that we've seen of the F2005 from
BBR, presumably because they were waiting to model the race wins
that never came (beating
the Jordans and Minardis doesn't really count as a win in our book!). The general
finish is what we expect from BBR with good paint and the decals included being
neatly applied. The small additional central wing on the front is off-centre
on our review model however. |
