RGM Design
RGM Design - New 1:43rd resin and metal kit

RGMB006

Alfa Romeo Montreal Watkins Glen 1974 #25

£31.40

Made for RGM by BBR this excellent kit is made in BBR's typical style with a crisply moulded resin body, white metal base plate and ancillaries and some very fine p/e details. We know it will build to look handsome as we saw the built version last month. A colour photo of the built model appeared on what's new page 2 of FSW 5/2001.

Arena
BBR/Arena - New 1:43rd resin hand-built model

BBA024M

Audi Quattro Gp4 Monte Carlo 1981 - Mikkola

£114.00

Early releases from the collaboration between BBR and Arena were rather good. Unfortunately some of the recent models we have had could definitely be better.
Our review model has some very well applied detailing, especially in the cockpit and around the front spot lights but is let down by a rather low roll cage and a rear wheel-arch that has not been cleaned up before painting. The lacquer coat is well applied but slightly yellowed so the whole thing looks as if it is nicotine stained!

BBM099

Ferrari F2001 1st GP Malaysia - Schumacher - kit

£28.40

BBR137A

Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina 2000- built

£114.00

The 2001 Malaysian GP should really never have been won by Ferrari following a farcical pit stop that had Barrichello stationary for 72 seconds and Schumacher for 90! A combination of the pace car and treacherous conditions allowed Schumacher to show why he is considered by many to be the best that ever lived.
The kit is well cast in metal with a wealth of p/e ancillary parts and all of the correct sponsorship. The tyres are the normal grooved slicks that the race was started on and not the treaded 'intermediates' that the bulk of the race was driven on. The 550 Barchetta is superbly built in red with black interior and has a motorshow quality paint finish. Even non-Ferrari fans must have one of these on their lottery winners list!

MEA Kit 43 - New 1:43rd resin and photo-etch kit and hand-built

MEA003

Honda 4 500cc GP/ Tourist Trophy 1966/67

£27.50

MEA003M

Honda 4 1st 500cc TT 1967 - Hailwood built

£38.95

The first offerings from MEA were very well received and we have no reason to see these as any different. The kit parts consist of resin tyres, engine, fuel tank, seat and fairings, a wealth of p/e for the frame, forks and wheels, well printed decals and various springs and wiring. Each kit contains 2 complete sets of parts and options include Hailwood's mounts from the '66 and '67 500cc GP series and his 67 TT winner. The built model is of the #4 machine ridden to victory by 'Mike the Bike' after leader Agostini's bike broke its chain in the 1967 Tourist Trophy.

RL068M

Johnny Lightning Special 1st Indy 500 '71 Unse -built

£88.15

The Cerbera Speed 12 represents a diversion for SMTS being very well cast in resin instead of metal. The last resin kits we had from them were Lotus Esprits a few years ago and we are pleased to say the casting has improved greatly. If it wasn't for a slight discrepancy in the dimensions of each side of the car - a mastering not moulding problem - we would have nominated this as a model of the month. The subject is the brutal looking metallic blue machine driven by TVR Tuscan regulars Ian McKellar and Bobby Verdon-Roe which proved fast but slightly fragile. The built model is very well finished with even paint and carefully applied details.

SMTS have captured the shape of the Colt Ford 'Johnny Lightning Special' superbly and this time they are expertly cast in white metal. Both models check out pretty well against race shots though we only have colour press shots of the 1970 version and there are a number of differences in decal colouring. As the press shots we have are all different we have to assume that SMTS have found more reference material and are therefore correct. Some of the smaller decals are slightly off register but otherwise not bad.

Ferrari 360 Challenge P/e Detail Set 1:24

£15.10

TAll of the etched detailing parts for Tamiya kits are superbly made and will add realism to a variety of models. The etched sets for the various F1 cars and the 360 consist of various grilles and seat-belt furniture and in the case of the 360 there are also wipers, side window frames and brake discs. The tyre side-wall stencils can be used time and again for a more realistic finish than the decals in many kits and even include the team's tyre set numbers. These along with the 'kill' switches will make a useful addition to any serious large scale modeller's tool box. The cast metal engine bay parts look good but we can't help but wonder whether they are really necessary, especially as they are virtually identical to the plastic parts in the kit. If anything the standard kit parts are better detailed. If you feel the need to add every after-market part available and wish to add some physical weight then fine, but we'll stick with the etched and turned details thanks.
