TAM24233

Porsche 962C - Shell Dunlop Norisring 1987

£17.00

TAM24232

Porsche 956 - #14 Canon Le Mans 1985

£17.00

TAM24234

Mercedes Benz CLK - DTM2000 - Schneider

£20.00

It almost goes without saying that these models not only look fairly accurate and - with the exception of the 962C - capture the line and feel of the full-size cars. They are also superbly made with a wonderful level of precise detailing. The Shell-Dunlop car has good detailing with full suspension, a comprehensive cockpit and a fairly good engine bay which will benefit from the addition of more wiring and piping. Decals are included for the Le Mans 1988 #17,18 & 19 which means that you have a wide driver choice - Bell, Stuck and Ludwig drove #17 which finished a superb 2nd, Andretti (father and son) drove #19 with John Andretti (they finished 6th) and Wollek, van der Merwe and Schuppan drove #18 which didn't finish.

But there's a problem - the bodyshell provided is that of the short-tail 962C #17 Shell car which ran at the Norisring in 1987 driven by Stuck and Bell and pictured on the box artwork. Quite what Tamiya are doing putting the LM decals in this kit we're not sure...... The Canon sponsored 956 is to our eyes a much better kit with a far higher level of detail and a lift off tail section whereas the 962C is a one piece body. The Canon car was driven by Palmer, Weaver and Lloyd and finished a superb 2nd overall. The DTM Mercedes looks superb and has a fully detailed V8 engine bay and lift off bonnet. This kit will be the most interesting of the three to build. Note - Studio 27 have announced a whole raft of transkits and decals for the 962C and 956 and it will be possible using these to create many fascinating different versions.

Gecko are a new name to the decal market and some of the existing players would do very well to take note. These sheets are all superb! The artwork is very comprehensive including drivers I.D cards and even pace notes for the Corolla and Focus. Not only are there very fine details included but they can be read so fine is the (Cartograph) printing!
The instructions are a lesson to most makers with clear placement drawings, notes on how the vehicles performed and a list of related websites to aid with additional reference material. For the record teenager Cristen Powell took her blue and white Reebok sponsored dragster to the semi-finals at the Winston finals meeting in 1997, Radstrom and Thorner finished 4th in Sweden with the Corolla and 2nd the following year with the Lancer. With the elegant two tone blue and white Focus Penny Mallory was the first woman to drive a WRC car on a World Championship event while children's TV presenter Konnie Huq eventually got to co-drive the Mitsubishi in Sweden this year after failing to get a license in time for the 2000 Rally GB.

Jean-Pierre Viranet (Tenariv is an anagram of the surname!) does not make so many kits these days but those he does make are distinguished by quality, accuracy, good detailing, high quality fabrication and close attention to the minutae of F1 history. His new kits - the top three here - are perfect examples of those facts. Made in his usual style of a resin body and chassis into which a great deal of the detail (engine block and transaxle etc) is moulded integrally and with good cast metal ancillaries - suspension - exhausts - radiators - dash panel - wings etc - these models (with simple fettling work) build to look every bit as good as similar high-tech productions by the likes of Tameo.

The fact that they look more simple in the boxes should not be allowed to put you off. See the colour photos of his recent production both in this edition and FSW 5-2001 for evidence. Of the historic detail factor J-P specialises in finding the small detail changes that teams make one race to another in their constant search for performance, and then modelling them. You have to study his releases side by side to find the differences but they are there - finely modelled and making them a three-dimensional development history of the cars in question. The three new releases pictured here are a good example - they are all from the same season - study them and you'll find that they are all different! The only criticism we have of these kits is that the configuration of the tyres is less than convincing. The change from flat road surface to sidewall is far too abrupt and the tyres have no gentle' shoulder as they should have - see lower photo of the Beltoise car at the Dutch GP for proof. There may be suitable alternatives in the range of tyres that MG Models make and you also need to look among aftermarket decals by Marsh and Virage for the tyre sidewall decals that most of these cars should have and which Tenariv do not (strangely) include within the kits. The reissue kits detailed above have all been vastly improved from the original releases in that the metal castings appear cleaner and more crisp and the instructions are now far more helpful and have full colour illustrations - these mostly include shots of the built model. Footnote - photos of the reissue models listed here should appear within our new web site providing that we can locate them in old issues of FSW and then scan them for the web.

OSCA 2500GT Zagato 1988

£130.20

We unfortunately know very little about this very aggressive looking design study other than it is based on Subaru mechanical parts and I (MC) want one! The model is very well finished in an unusual metallic red with an excellent paint finish and carefully applied detailing. The front air intake looks a little odd but as we can find no picture of the real car we will have to give ABC the benefit of the doubt - after all it is a Zagato design!
