Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine Gordon Johncock’s first Indy 500 victory should have been a jubilant affair but sadly it wasn’t quite as happy as it might have been. Accidents and rain delayed the start for two days until the Wednesday and then team-mate Swede Savage suffered severe injuries which would eventually claim his life a few weeks after the race. To add insult to injury, one of Graham McRae’s crew was killed by a fire truck travelling the wrong way up the pit lane on the way to Savage’s accident and rain then cut the race short. It’s still on the record books as a win though and Indy 500 winning cars are usually colourful machines, this one being no exception. The kit parts offer the choice of any of the three STP backed cars and we see excellent resin for the main body, engine & gearbox unit, wing elements, seat and a couple of other odds and ends. There’s plenty of clean white metal too and depending on which car you are building you will need to pay attention to details such as wheel centre design. The cockpit tub and much of the suspension is photo-etched and clearly printed decals finish things off. The instructions are fairly comprehensive and if your own built model looks as good as the hand builts then you will have a fine piece to add to your Indy 500 collection.
