Books - Bentley, A Racing History (Author: Venables)

Bentley, A Racing History (Author: Venables) by Books

Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine
weight 1.8 kg by David Venables
The Bentley name is synonymous with comfortable, fast gentlemanís vehicles and this reputation was built in no small part by the racing prowess of the companyís machines in the 1920s and 1930s. A large part of this book is, of course, dedicated to this period but it starts with the history of the man who gave his name to the cars, Walter Owen Bentley. After a not particularly distinguished school career, WO started an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway and while there he tasted his first motorsport, buying a motorcycle and competing in trials and races. With his apprenticeship completed he moved on to the National Motor Cab Company, where he took over responsibility for the maintenance of Londonís taxi fleet before moving on and taking over, with his brother, Lecoq & Ferney, importers of a number of vehicles including DPFs, which WO raced extensively. 1914 saw the outbreak of war and WO found employment refining and redesigning aircraft engines, ultimately moving up to Coventry to make engines at Humber to his own design. With this experience, peacetime saw the start of production of Bentley motorcars and then weíre in to the golden era. Top level racing with Bentleys stopped just after WW2 and there was then a gap of fifty years before that famous name returned to Le Mans and won again. Itís all in here in great detail and reviewing was difficult task as it was too easy to just get completely engrossed in the early history. Throughout there are excellent photos too, from the family and company archives as well as many private collections.
