Books - Bodywork Optional But Desirable, Story of 500cc Car Racing (Author: Rawlinson)
Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine The title of this book is taken from the original rule book for the 500cc formula published in 1947 and it charts the history of the formula from its beginnings on the hillclimb courses during the late 1940s through to the end of the 500cc F3 and FJunior era in the mid 1960s. We’ve all heard of the series production racers such as Kieft and Cooper but there were many many more as well as the home built specials created by keen clubmen. The author first takes us season by season though the category’s heydays before brief chapters on derivatives and 500 racing outside the UK. There are profiles of many of the significant drivers and he attempts to catalogue all of the car types built. There is a strong following for these little racers today and the author himself hillclimbs a Buckler and this, along with many other currently competing cars, is photographed in colour. A fascinating look at a very significant chapter in motor racing history.
Over the years we have created a library here at GPM and many collectors regularly ask us which books we use most and which are the most reliable source of information. We offer quality titles selected for their reference material content.
