Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine F1 Retro 1970 Weight 1.8kg by Mark Hughes We had high hopes for this book when it was announced and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Autosport Grand Prix editor Mark Hughes’ in depth study of the 1970 F1 season draws heavily on two highly regarded texts of the time - Ted Simon’s “The Chequered Year” and the Jackie Stewart/Peter Manso diary “Faster” - and is illustrated with carefully selected images from LAT’s extensive archive. The opening line of Hughes’ text sums up the year perfectly, “It was beautiful back then, but obscene - a time of lethal innocence.”, and we see the very basic facilities at dramatic but dangerous circuits in glorious period pictures. There are a few photos sequences which are familiar, such as Ickx & Oliver’s first lap inferno in Spain, but the majority are new to us and capture the action off the track as well as on. Absolutely superb!
Over the years we have created a library here at GPM and many collectors regularly ask us which books we use most and which are the most reliable source of information. We offer quality titles selected for their reference material content.
