Lotus 8 MG XPEG `SAR5` 1954 by MEA Kit 43
Lotus 8 MG XPEG `SAR5` 1956
Kit available MEA062
SAR 5 was the first Lotus 8 chassis built and was extensively raced by Chapman and others during the 1954 season. In 1955 it passed to Austen Nurse and he in turn sold it to Roy Bloxham in 1956. Bloxham crashed the car at Mallory Park and it was repaired with a much shortened tail, which is how we see the car here. The car has since been restored to its original form but the current owner provided black and white images of the car when he first acquired it and it is from these that the model has been made. As usual from MEA, there will be a fair amount of cleaning of castings etc to do, but the basic shape is pretty good, there’s a modest amount of etch and suitable sized fine wire wheels. Period reports say that the car was painted burgundy after repairs but the model is finished in traditional BRG.

About MEA Kit 43
An interesting range initially specialising in 1:43 motorcycles. The nature of the subjects and the size of many of the parts mean that these are best suited to those with good eyesight! Casting quality can be variable and this combined with the size puts them firmly in the 'for the experienced modeller' category.
Alongside the bikes are a number of Dakar raid subjects and early Lotus race cars, again offered as kits and hand builts. SPL series are hand built only and concentrate on very unusual race cars. Build quality is variable, basic and nowhere near the class leaders. They are usually presented in recycled Spark cases. Very interesting subject matter though.
Made in France.
