Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine Porsche’s 550 is best known as an open car but the first two chassis were clothed
with a coupe body with full smooth undertray for improved aerodynamics and
top end speed. It worked and one of the two cars won its class at Le Mans and
then went on to be raced extensively in Europe for the rest of the season before
being shipped to South America for Guatemalans Herrarte and Juhan to race in
the Carrera PanAmericana. There were a few subtle changes made to the body
between Le Mans and the CPA, the most notable being extra rear vents to cope
with the heat, and these have been incorporated in the main body mouldings.
Looking at the kit parts, there is a bit of fettling needed prior to painting, with flash
to remove and a few minor bubbles to deal with. The doors, front bonnet and rear
engine cover are separate, very fine castings and there is plenty of detail to go
beneath including a full engine. There is a good level of photo-etched detail and
the decals are clearly printed in both kits. Although there were pairs of cars in each
event, we are only offered the class winner for each kit, which is a little frustrating
as some may wish to go for the other version due to driver choices or completist
collections. The kits will take a bit of experience to build, but the final model should
be well worth the efforts and we expect that there will be plenty of builders who
will decide to add a few extra touches to the already decent detail.
