The green light was given to a full F1 project at Aston Martin in 1955 and work started alongside the DBR1 sportscar to design and build the car. The project was then delayed while sportscar racing took precedence and it was May 1959 before a DBR4 took to the track in anger in the non-championship International Trophy. Far too late considering the developments that had been made by the other teams, not least Cooper. In that first race, Salvadori finished an excellent second but the race was much shorter than a full Grand Prix and after Shelby retired with bearing failure it was discovered that Salvadori’s car wouldn’t have lasted much longer. The few proper Grand Prix contested saw a best finish of sixth overall. The kit parts are cleanly cast and look to be a typically straightforward build. There’s a reasonable amount of suspension detail and the chassis frame is visible inside the cockpit. The decals offer four race numbers so it is possible to build either car from Silverstone or either car from the Dutch GP.
