Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine Modelling all of the lightweight E Types built by Jaguar in one go is quite an undertaking and it certainly offers a great choice to collectors. There were twelve factory built lightweight cars and one low drag coupe built, the latter had been intended as the first of many but the project never really got off the ground and two of the most famous cars were extensively modified by their owners into their own low drag machines. The three Cunningham cars were identical apart from registration and race numbers and so the first three kits only differ in these respects. The bulk of the other kits also use the same base castings but in some cases small modifications will be needed such as repositioning of fuel fillers and fitting and positioning of the correct vents on the rear. The instructions for all of the RL081 references are the same and here we have a bit of an issue. There are brief histories of all of the individual chassis and these help with colour descriptions but the instruction drawing is common to all and doesn’t help with these smaller details, so you will need additional reference material. We understand the need to rationalise a little on the castings to make these models viable, but better instructions would really be a help with what are, otherwise, very well made kits. It would appear that SMTS‘ own builders have a similar problem as the Bob Jane car, very well finished as the hand built model is, is missing its roof vent. The remaining three cars are all very different and the parts are unique for these, so no such issues here. The silver Linder/Knocker car was covered in rivets and these are a little overdone on the casting and look a little odd on the finished model, but we have no issues with the remaining two. A brave effort.
Reasonably well cast white metal kits that build with ease. Open wheeled subjects usually accurate, road cars not always so. With hand-built models again single seaters usually better. Made in England.
