Product Review Taken From Four Small Wheels Magazine Lotus 64 Indy 1969 Andretti Hand built available RL096M USAC banned gas turbines for 1969 so the Lotus/STP entry for that year’s Indy 500 had a turbocharged Ford V8 in the back kicking out a thumping 700bhp. In practice Mario Andretti clocked over 170mph and then lost a wheel due to bearing failure and crashed. The cars were withdrawn and like other very innovative Lotus single seaters, never raced. SMTS’ kit is well thought out and the metal castings are all very clean requiring just basic clean-up for paint preparation. While you’re doing this, a few test fits will be needed and on our sample the rear body work will need slight adjustment where the location tabs fit in. The engine is semi-exposed so there’s the option of adding a little extra detail here and there is a modest amount of etch for the finishing touches. The decals look to be excellent so this should make for an impressive model once completed.
Reasonably well cast white metal kits that build with ease. Open wheeled subjects usually accurate, road cars not always so. With hand-built models again single seaters usually better. Made in England.
