Adler 18-35 Prasidentenwagen 1906 by Autocult

Luxury class from Frankfurt

The Hessian city Frankfurt am Main at the end of the 19th century in 1899:   The company Adler-Fahrradwerke, located in the Gutleutstraße 9, had experienced an extraordinary growth since its founding in 1880. Beside the production of bicycles and, from 1898, typewriter manufacturing, the company also started with the assembling of stylish automobiles. The bodywork of automobiles from this vehicle class was guided by the design of horse-drawn carriages, primarily from France. It was not long before Adler started with the development and production of their own engines for their cars, based on their self-gained knowledge in engine manufacturing. The water-cooled cylinders were cast in gray iron in a single mold as a two-cylinder block. Thus made it possible to combine two cylinder banks to a four-cylinder in-line engine with a engine displacement of over 4 liters. Such engines, at customer’s option up to 50-hp, were only reserved for selected and elitist automobiles, which often cost a considerable fortune in those days. Customers for such vehicles belonged exclusively to the “upper class” and the nobility, right up to the Imperial Court.   With their Type 18/35 Adler offered this class of customers a noble car around the years 1906 – 1908, from which only little information has survived until the present day.  The original of this scale model is believed to be the only surviving and known car of this type. For decades it is owned by the Allgemeiner Schnauferl-Club e.V., a German organization, which is very engaged in the preservation of classic cars and their tradition. The original and fully restored car is on exhibition at the museum Central Garage in Bad Homburg.
