Zbrojovka Z6 1935 by Autocult

The little Czechoslovak

The Czech company “Československá státní zbrojovka”, known in common parlance just as “Zbrojovka”, started with the production of small cars  in the mid 1920s.  The company, based in Brno, designated its first series-produced car as the “Z 18”. The small car also went down well with the people. In 1930 the model was replaced by the “Z 9” that was fitted with a 22 hp engine. But the “Z 9” could not reach the same popularity like its predecessor and was already replaced two years later. In 1933 “Zbrojovka” did it better with the Z 4 and met the taste of its customers again. Only in 1936 the production was ceased in favor of the new models “Z 5” and “Z 6”. Whereas the “Z 5” was fitted with a 40 hp-strong engine that accelerated the car up to 120 km/h, also expressed by the addition “Express” within its designation, the “Z 6” remained true to the previous range of models. The fitted engine was a water-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine with a displacement of 735 cc and a performance of 19 hp. A 3-speed transmission transferred the power to the rear axle fitted with 16-inch wheels and accelerated the small car up to 90 km/h. The extremely successful technical implementation of small car concept was additionally boosted by an aerodynamically designed look. The car was presented for the first time at the Prague Motor Show in October 1935. The visitors and also the representatives of the press were quite keen on the small, only 3,8 meter-short vehicle and at the sight of its price tag of 19,800 CZK the most were left in disbelief, as this price was an very favorable price for such kind of cars.   This favorable purchase price probably also quickened the good sales from the beginning. In total almost 500 copies of the small car left the production facilities until the production was stopped due to the preparations of war.
