Shelby's Racing Mustangs by Book

A decade ago, when Shelby Mustang GT350: My Years Designing, Testing and Racing Carroll’s Legendary Mustangs, was released, it was lauded as the most authoritative and comprehensive book yet written on the subject. Now, David Bull Publishing is proud to announce Shelby’s Racing Mustangs: My Years Inside Carroll’s Mustang Racing Teams, a freshened, updated and revised look at Shelby’s pony cars on the track. But while it would be easy to think that the new work is simply a retitled reprint, nothing could be further from the truth. This new book contains 336 pages (100+ more than the original book) with most of the new pages devoted to a more detailed telling of Chuck’s years with the Shelby race teams, particularly the Trans-Am Mustang sedans, or “notchbacks.” The authors have sourced more than 125 brand-new photographs, most in colour and most from private collections which have never before been seen in print. Most of these spectacular images come from insiders themselves -- drivers, team mechanics, engineers, and race mechanics and SCCA track officials -- all of whom had an all-access pass to the inner workings of the exciting world of 1960s sports car racing. Complementing these new images are those that appeared only in Shelby Mustang GT350’s special Publisher’s Edition. But this new edition is about more than just the pictures (345 of them, in colour and black and white and nearly double the number appearing in Shelby Mustang GT350). Complementing the treasure trove of images, the text contains new information sourced from letters, memos, race team managers’ personal notes, recollections from drivers, fabricators and race mechanics. Contemporaneous, hand-drawn sketches -- thought for certain by the authors to have been lost forever -- have been located and appear in the book. This results in a level of detail significantly greater than in the older book. In general terms, whereas Shelby Mustang GT350 concentrated on how that iconic muscle car came to life, Shelby’s Racing Mustangs concentrates more on how the GT350 and, especially, the hardtop Mustangs, performed on the track. Of course, Chuck’s involvement in the creation of Shelby’s iconic street machines hasn’t been left out. Throughout his life, Chuck has maintained that “when you find something that works, stick with it,” so readers of the earlier book will recognize some familiar passages and anecdotes, intermingled with fresh text and photos. Wrapping up this package is a concise index and two detailed appendices allowing for the book to be read either cover-to-cover as a fascinating novel or used as a “lookup-the-stats” reference book. To sum it all up, Shelby’s Racing Mustangs is the must-read for both the casual motorsports fan as well as the hard-core Shelby Mustang or Trans-Am racing enthusiast. It will entertain, educate, enlighten, and not disappoint.
