Designed for the 1972 Formula One season, the March Ford 721X introduced one of the most unconventional technical solutions ever seen on a Grand Prix car. Its transverse gearbox was created to centralise mass and improve agility, anticipating concepts that would only become common many years later. The project proved too ambitious for its time and was soon abandoned. Yet today the 721X is remembered as one of Formula One's most fascinating engineering experiments. Precisely because it dared to challenge convention.
