DKW F91 Sportwagen Brandt 1954 Silver by Autocult

The DKW in special livery

Alongside his extremely successful motorsports colleagues, Walter Schlüter and Heinz Meier, Ingolstadt factory driver, Hubert Brand, sat behind the wheel of a Rallye F 91 in 1954. He achieved respectable results, such as finishing fifth place at the 16th Rallye Wiesbaden with Hermann Luba. In the starting lists for numerous rallies and hill climbs, Brand always appeared in a DKW in the class up to 1000 cc, which corresponded to the F 91. However, anyone who took a closer look at his sports car would quickly realize that it did not resemble the production model at all. Its steel body was much more appealing and rounded than the production model's, and the car as a whole looked sportier, bearing subtle similarities to the Porsche 365 of the time. The body was unique — some see Pininfarina's influence in it, while others believe the sheet metal came from coachbuilder Baur. Without achieving any outstanding victories, Brand sold his "Sportwagen Brand," as it was referred to in some race entries, to Austrian driver Herbert Roittner in 1957. Roittner drove it in the first Semperit Rally, which took place on May 18–19, 1957, and went on to become a classic event in the Austrian motorsports scene. Barely three months later, on August 12, 1957, the customized DKW was reduced to scrap metal in an accident.
