Saab 95HK Motorhome 1965 Red/White by Autocult
Self-knowledge
is the
first step toward improvement.
This motto could easily be the story behind the
Saab 95H. To understand the Saab 95H, the preceding Saab 92H must be part of
the story, which was built in 1963 by Torsten Johannesson and was already part
of the autocult model range in 2017.
Johannesson
apparently noticed very quickly that his engine choice with only 25 hp was a
mistake. In order to make his vehicle more agile, he built a second version, whose
slightly enlarged camper body was mounted on the chassis of a Saab 95. Since
the Saab 95 did not go into series production until 1965, this also could not
be done before 1965 Thanks to the new chassis, 40 two-stroke horsepower were now
available as a drive. Johannsson named his caravan 95H in reference to the
chassis. He also modified the optics, which was particularly visible at the
front end. Although his motorhome somehow looked just as “sad” as its predecessor,
the entire car as a whole seemed more adult and more like a car – probably this
was due to the centrally arranged front grille, which was taken over by the
Saab 95.
It
can be assumed that the 40 hp performance was still too weak for Johannesson. With
the changeover of the Saab engine technology to a four-stroke drive in 1967,
the designer replaced the engine with a 65 hp V4 engine, which was henceforth
available for the Saab 95. At that time, however, his dream of conquering the
hearts of the camper community was probably already decreasing. His efforts to
register his vehicle came to nothing and so the unique motorhome remained the
only built copy.
