RMA Amphi-Ranger 2800SR 1985 Polizei by Autocult
Full Speed Ahead through the Water...
In the mid-1980s, there was a steady demand for a land-water vehicle designed for monitoring pipeline conduits. In response, Rheinauer Maschinen- und Armaturenbau GmbH developed the RMA Amphi-Ranger 2800 SR model, where the first three letters stood for the company’s name and the number 2800 indicated the displacement of the built-in Ford V6 engine, which initially produced 135 hp. The two letters “SR” in the model designation were known only to insiders; they stood for “Seawater Resistant.” Technically, of course, the vehicle’s internal components had to be equally suited to both completely different driving conditions. To achieve this, the powertrain, which included a manual 4- or 5-speed transmission, was equipped with a 2-speed transfer case. With the option to switch from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive, the vehicle reached nearly 140 km/h on asphalt and could creep along at a minimum speed of 3.5 km/h. Once in the water, it reached a top speed of 10 knots—approximately 18 km/h.Between 1985 and 1995, approximately 70 models rolled off the assembly lines, with the majority likely used in pipeline construction or monitoring worldwide, and only a very small number ordered by private individuals. Given the base price at the time of 100,000 DM, some prospective buyers may have reconsidered, wondering if they wouldn’t be better off investing that amount in a regular road car instead.
