Sporting Jowetts by Book
The Jowett Motor Company was born
of a blacksmiths business at the turn of
the Twentieth Century and for the first
decade of its existence supplied small,
utilitarian vehicles, mostly to the local market
in Yorkshire and the north of England.
Production was stopped during the First
World War and resumed in 1920. The cars
were never the fastest but they were rugged
and the company used long distance trials to
emphasise this. As well as the promotional
tours. The cars became popular among
enthusiastic drivers for sporting trials and
rallies and by the early 1950s they were
sought after and very advanced vehicles by
the standards of other British makers. The
author is the librarian for the Jowett Car Club
and over a period of time he has collected
together first hand accounts of the many tests that the cars were put through,
either gleaned from club articles, period media reports or interviews with those
who were involved. It makes for fascinating reading and gives a great insight into
a period when motoring was often a real adventure.
