The subtitle of this book sums up BRM’s V16 rather well, a glorious failure. The plan was to create an all British car and team to take on the best in the World and superficially everything seemed to be in place with experienced management, engineers, drivers and decent funding. The reality was a magnificent looking and sounding 1.5 litre supercharged V16 machine which made its race debut at Silverstone in 1950 and promptly broke a driveshaft as the starter’s flag dropped. The team persevered for five years with the car and though it took part in many non championship races and even finished some of them in decent positions, the only World Championship start came at home in 1951. This superbly researched volume lays the background story to the project with the inspiration drawn from ERA and of some of the other pre-war race teams on the design, then we’re introduced to the key players and the car itself in excellent close up detail. From here we move on to the development and racing with over three hundred carefully selected photographs showing the subtle changes to the car race by race. A fascinating work.
