The World Rally Car formula was designed to encourage more manufacturers to take part as it removed the requirement for expensive homologation and instead offered greater flexibility to manufacturers as they could incorporate turbo-charged, four-wheel-drive drivetrains into production bodyshells. Ford’s answer was based on the Focus and the first car made its debut in 1999. Over the subsequent twelve years there were several evolutions of the car and forty-four WRC victories along the way contributing to two manufacturers’ championships.
