British at Indianapolis by Book

weight 1.8kg by Ian Wagstaff
The Indianapolis 500 Mile race is very much an American institution but British teams and drivers have been involved from the very start and have been responsible for many developments. In the pre-war era it was mostly British drivers flying the Union Flag and first there was Hughie Hughes who raced in the circuit's opening season in 1910 and in the inaugural 500 in 1911. The first victory for a British citizen was 1916 when Italian born Dario Resta took the flag and since then British drivers have regularly taken the top step of the podium and another Dario, this time Franchitti, won for his second time in 2010. Many British manufacturers have also featured heavily and Cooper changed the face of the race in 1961 as they had done in F1 a couple of years earlier demonstrating the advantage of the mid-engined layout. Lotus, Lola, McLaren, Galmer, March, Reynard and G-Force are all British manufacturers who have won the race and two teams that are considered American, Chaparral and the hugely successful Penske, were UK built too. This very detailed history includes all of these and much, much more.
