Return to Glory! : The Mercedes 300 SL Racing Car by Book
Return to Glory, The Mercedes-Benz 300SL
Weight 1.2kg by Robert Ackerson
Mercedes Benz’s return to motor racing in 1952 after a break of 13 years was extremely successful using their purpose built lightweight coupe, the 300SL. It finished second on its debut on the Mille Miglia and then won the other four races entered that year including Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana. With full support from Mercedes the author has been able to select a wonderful collection of photographs from the company’s archives which not only show the cars in action but also under development and construction, allowing us to see the detail of the exquisite space frame chassis and its production based mechanical parts. There is also a section on the restoration of the oldest surviving example of the type, again packed with pictures. The text is excellent too with plenty of detail on the colours. It is quite expensive for a regular format 144 printed pages, but that is largely due to a very limited print run.
