Watkins Glen: The Street Years 1948-1952 by Book
The dream of up-state New York lawyer Cameron Argetsinger, the 1948 Watkins Glen race was the first sportscar race in the USA for many years and these races became pivotal in the growth of competition on the East coast over the following years. The original course saw the start finish straight and pits in the village of Watkins Glen and the event was devised as a means of promoting tourism to the area. To this end a concours event took place alongside the races and looking through the magnificent period photos in this book it is clear that many vehicles were entered for both. Among the pre-war European exotics such as Bugattis and Talbot Lagos, there were modern imported MGs and Triumphs and plenty of home grown machinery, particularly specials. Over three hundred photos illustrate the detailed story, many of which are in colour, and there are detailed entry lists and results from each year of the event. A wonderfully atmospheric and superbly researched history.
