The World Rally Championship began in 1973 and the first decade saw rapid progress in vehicle development. At the start the favoured weapons were Group 2 cars, very closely allied to standard production models, but very soon Group 4 was in the ascendancy with much more mechanical modification allowed beneath what appeared to the customer to be a production bodyshell. By the end of the first decade, Audi had introduced the Quattro and rallying had changed forever by 1982. So, who better to take us through this glorious decade of rallying than co-driver, journalist and later Austin-Rover competitions director, John Davenport and our favourite rallying photographer Reinhard Klein?
