Lotus Elan Goodwood 1963 #18 SMART by MEA Kit 43

Having retired from racing following his Goodwood accident, Stirling Moss started the Stirling Moss Auto Racing Team and employed Sir John Whitmore as one of his first drivers. The car was a Lotus Elan with bodywork modified by Willaims and Pritchard to the design of Frank Costin with the car initially featuring a revised roof line and later a new nose. When the car finished races Whitmore was the winner, when it didn’t it was because a rear wheel had fallen off. Goodwood’s August meeting as depicted here was one of the non-finishes. The kit features a well cast body with no bubbles, though there is some flash to clean up and the resin is quite hard, so be careful not to drop and break it. Overall the kit parts are quite simple and go together reasonably well, though on our sample hand built the windows aren’t a great fit.

About MEA Kit 43

An interesting range initially specialising in 1:43 motorcycles. The nature of the subjects and the size of many of the parts mean that these are best suited to those with good eyesight! Casting quality is variable and this combined with the size puts them firmly in the 'for the experienced modeller' category. Alongside the bikes are a number of Dakar raid subjects and early Lotus race cars, again offered as kits and hand builts. The SPL series is hand built only and concentrates on very unusual race cars. Build quality is basic, variable and nowhere near the class leaders and usually presented in recycled Spark cases. Very interesting subjects that may otherwise not be modelled and therefore for the hardcore collector. Made in France.

A dedicated team, we provide the personal touch!
