Ossa 250 1969 #4 Herrero by MEA Kit 43
This is a fascinating subject from an historical point of view. Ossa were a small Spanish motorcycle manufacturer, best known for off road machinery, and Santiago Herrero was an amateur racer who ran privately owned Derbiis and Bulcaltos from his motorcycle repair shop. Ossa designer Eduardo Giro recognised the young man’s abilities both as a rider and engineer and employed him to help develop an innovative motorcycle with full magnesium monocoque chassis. The Ossa engine gave away massive power when compared with the Japanese 250 opposition but the frame was some 20kgs lighter and on a small bike, that’s significant. Herrero won several races in 1969 and went into the last round leading the championship but fell, eventually finishing third in the standings. The kit parts are based around five resin castings, the frame and engine are cast in unit, with a separate fairing, exhaust and a pair of tyres and the remaining parts are mostly etched. These kits aren’t the most sophisticated and are definitely for the experienced builder and with the finished model only about 3cm long, you need to be precise. The hand built is reasonably well finished and there is a figure included too in both kit and built.

About MEA Kit 43
An interesting range initially specialising in 1:43 motorcycles. The nature of the subjects and the size of many of the parts mean that these are best suited to those with good eyesight! Casting quality is variable and this combined with the size puts them firmly in the 'for the experienced modeller' category.
Alongside the bikes are a number of Dakar raid subjects and early Lotus race cars, again offered as kits and hand builts. The SPL series is hand built only and concentrates on very unusual race cars. Build quality is basic, variable and nowhere near the class leaders and usually presented in recycled Spark cases. Very interesting subjects that may otherwise not be modelled and therefore for the hardcore collector.
Made in France.
