Lotus 79 Photo Etched Detailing Set 1:20 by Tamiya
The Lotus 79, like a number of other Lotus designs before it, made a significant difference to Formula 1 when it appeared in 1978, proving that without ground effect aerodynamics, you were nowhere. It is strange then that, until now, this car has been more or less ignored by the mainstream kit makers but now we have a very welcome new kit from Tamiya. As to be expected from this maker, the excellent kit parts are very well thought out and precisely moulded, giving the modeller plenty of details and scope to add more should they wish. Tamiya's own etched detailing set includes wing endplates, brake facings, grilles, seat belts and various brackets and fasteners. If these aren't enough for you, the aftermarket suppliers have really caught the bug with this kit and there are plenty of etched and machined parts out there. From a decoration point of view, the decals appear to be pretty close to the correct and difficult to match printers oatmeal and the kit offers the choice of the British or German Grands Prix, both of which were 'non-smoking'. There are omissions however in the form of Goodyear logos both on the tyres and the wing endplates due to licensing issues. As well as etched parts, there are plenty of aftermarket decals coming to build other race options and fill in any other gaps.
